Explosive Lifting Burns More Calories

Lifting weights is a terrific fat burner, because intense exercise raises your metabolism 24/7 even when you’re not in the gym and your body is transformed into a nonstop furnace that is always melting fat to some degree. Some seasoned trainers and those with the right metabolism can avoid cardio for the most part or do very little, except when they are preparing for a contest and want to strip body fat levels down to single digits. Lifters can burn even more calories and fat when they lift explosively. Lifting explosively, even when using heavy weights, trains the nervous system to activate muscles quickly and promotes strength and power.

It also burns more calories than training slowly. A Ball State University study, led by Scott Mezzetti, showed that explosive squat machine training burned about 12 percent more calories than training more slowly. The researchers concluded that combining explosive weight training with moderate-intensity exercise could increase metabolic rate and promote weight loss. Combine explosive lifting with high-intensity weight training for rapid increases in fitness and accelerated weight loss. Explosive weight training “turns on the nervous system,” which increases power and the capacity to accelerate weights quickly. (Medicine Science Sports Exercise, 39: 1291-1301)
