Contest Report - 2017 BCABBA British Columbia Championships

A Weekend to Remember!

The 2017 edition of this annual competition was held at the World Famous Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre (Under the Sails) in conjunction with year three of the IFBB Vancouver Pro Show. A 2-day competition with an event filled Fitness Expo bringing some of the most well known names in the industry, from Larissa Reis to IFBB Pro Dennis James. The events flowed smoothly, a testament to fine tuning by promoter Michelle Krack and her team, terrific job all around. BC Provincials had approximately 200 entries, a bit down from previous years possibly in part to CBBF Nationals in certain categories (report elsewhere on this site) ending up being held a week earlier. A blessing in disguise for at least one competitor.

Bodybuilding:

Juniors featured an up and coming phenom in Kyle Bron, who also won his Classic Physique class. It was a good and busy day for Masters Bodybuilding champion Michael Gorenstein, placing in both Open Heavyweights and Classic Physique. The story of this show was future pro Kook Kwang Moon who won the Super Heavyweights. He had won the Northern Classic Overall title a few weeks earlier and did the same here.

16. Nawzad Palani - Classic Physique Open B Class/Overall - 1st.

Bikini:

Bikini led off Day 2. As the category gets more and more competitive, the level of conditioning required to excel climbs. Provincials saw a real battle of Overall winners from previous shows and some very pleasant surprises. Loan-Anh Phillips took the Masters 45+ class, just gets better with age! In the 35+ class, Jody Andrews sported that perfect combination of muscle and shape for this category that the judges are looking for. She also placed third in a very tough Open 'D' Class as well. Second place went to Yvonne Woelke, while Pamela Sparks took third. The Open Classes were where things got very interesting, we dare say a stacked field would be an understatement! The aforementioned "blessing in disguise" went to 'A' Class winner and eventual Overall Champion Tonya Olson. After a disappointing Nationals where she missed top 5 a week earlier, she set her sights on requalifying for next year. Focus, determination and a good week of prep did wonders to put her back on top! No easy task as the field included MD Canada featured athlete and overall winner of the Northern Classic Vanessa Chung (second place here). 'B' Class saw an improved Sarah Taylor (Popeye's Classic champ) up against a VERY improved and brimming with confidence Claire Wheeler who placed 1st. Kayla Edwards placed third. Moving on to 'C' Class, veteran competitor Adriana Gentile was hard to beat. Top 5 included 2016 Leigh Brandt Muscle Classic winner Alia Dunnill (2nd), Kiera Nielson (3rd) and MD Canada featured athlete and overall winner of the Iron Ore Classic Kendall Kershaw (5th). Kendall broadened her competitive horizons in recent months at the NPC Empire Classic winning her class there! Masters competitor Pamela Sparks placed 4th. Speaking of MD Canada featured athletes, Melissa Olson placed 4th in (as aforementioned) a super tough 'D' Class. 5th was Alicia Smart getting her requalification after Nationals a week earlier. Top 3 were Masters Champ Jody Andrews (3rd), always top placer Brandie Mabee (2nd) and the very tightly conditioned Knight of Champions Overall winner Maxine Somov (1st). 'E' Class was the smallest at this show with only 4 entries, Autumn Baker taking 1st place.

In Conclusion:

With promoters such as Michelle Krack and the tireless efforts of the volunteers and the BCABBA led by President Ross Duncan, the health of the sport in British Columbia is robust and in very good hands! Looking forward to the 2018 edition, mark July 7-8 on your calendar. Honored to have been official photographer for both the IFBB and BCABBA events this year, it was a good challenge, but happy to say the results speak for themselves.
