Is Big Ramy Unbeatable?

By Steve Blechman

With the 2022 Olympia Weekend on the horizon, there is added excitement and anticipation this year as bodybuilding’s Super Bowl returns to Las Vegas with a powerful new vision, upgraded production values and added prestige under the direction of Olympia President Dan Solomon and Jake Wood, owner of the Olympia. While many facets of the Olympia Weekend will be notably different and improved this year, one question on the minds of some bodybuilding fans is whether the Mr. Olympia winner will remain the same.

At 290-300 pounds with insane mass and an X-frame shape, the general consensus among the fans and experts alike is that two-time Mr. Olympia Big Ramy is simply too much for anyone else to handle right now, and is on track to three-peat and earn his third consecutive title. And again this year, Ramy has the “Dream Team” of Chad Nicholls and Dennis James in his corner, which has given Ramy a massive advantage over the other competitors. Then again, no man in bodybuilding is unbeatable. Even great Mr. Olympia champions like Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler and Phil Heath eventually succumbed to defeat. Big Ramy faces a number of worthy adversaries this year that include William Bonac, Hadi Choopan, Brandon Curry, Nick Walker and Hunter Labrada. Or could there be a wildcard in the top six like Andrew Jacked, Derek Lunsford, Blessing Awodibu,Samson Dauda,Akim Williams or Iain Valliere?Ron Harris looks at all sides of the story in“Is Big Ramy Unbeatable?”

2022 has seen the emergence of several promising new bodybuilders, such as BSN athlete Andrew Jacked and Blessing Awodibu, who will be making their Mr. Olympia debut this year and could make things more interesting for fans in a contest already packed with top contenders. Ron Harris looks at the lineup of competitors in Open Bodybuilding, Classic Physique and the 212 division in MD’s “2022 Mr. Olympia Preview.”

As exciting as this year’s Open Mr. Olympia will be, there is one match-up that will have fans on the edge of their seats: the 212 Olympia. The two previous 212 Olympia winners, Shaun Clarida (2020) and Kamal Elgargni (2019), will probably wind up as the final two to fight it out for the 212 win. Giles “Tiger” Thomas looks at 212 Olympia battles, past and present, and asks industry experts who will emerge victorious this year in “Battle of the 212s.”

It’s been another eventful year in our sport and industry. Thankfully, the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic seems to be over. Unlike the grim report on the top stories of 2021, when the virus may have been a contributing factor in the premature deaths in our sport, this year’s news was better. Blessing Awodibu, Derek Lunsford, Flex Lewis and Andrew Jacked all stirred things up.While the final storyline of 2022 will take place on the third weekend of December at the Olympia Weekend, Ron Harris looks at the news items that had us all talking and posting this year in “The Top 10 Stories of 2022.”

Terrence Ruffin has been a rising star in Classic Physique since the inception of the division in 2016. Now, he’s the only two-time Arnold Classic champion and has been knocking on the door of the Olympia title with second-place finishes to Chris Bumstead in both 2020 and 2021. Ruff Diesel sat down with MD to go over topics that ranged from his friendship with the late John Meadows, the height controversy in Classic Physique, and why posing matters in “Ruffin Is Ready to Rise! Will Terrence ‘Ruff Diesel’ Ruffin Rise to the Top at the Classic Physique Olympia?”
