Sergio Oliva Jr:

‘2021 Will Be My Year!’

By Steve Blechman

Bodybuilders know how to push forward, overcome obstacles and look toward the future no matter what the current circumstances are. Few competitors embody this mindset better than Sergio Oliva Jr., who is on the cover of this month’s MD. Sergio is both one of the most popular and also controversial figures in pro bodybuilding today. The son of the great three-time Mr. Olympia Sergio Oliva, the Chicago-born Sergio junior came into the sport with tremendous expectations and pressure to succeed immediately. Instead, it’s been a challenging climb up the pro ranks struggling to fill the enormous shoes of his legendary father. Sergio junior has forged his own identity as a man and a champion bodybuilder, winning the New York Pro and never looking back.

Sergio Oliva Jr. has also dealt with issues many of us are all too familiar with: occasional financial hardships and a messy divorce. But in early 2020, he returned to the stage after well over a year away to storm the Arnold Classic stage at 278 pounds; earning a top-five spot as well as the Ed Corney Best Poser Award. Shortly after, he traveled to Australia to compete in the Arnold Classic, which had been canceled while he was in flight, and was stuck halfway around the world for three months. Ron Harris caught up with him to see how he’s been managing during the pandemic, and to learn about his new supplement company, Cosmic Industries. Of course, Sergio being a man who pulls no punches, had plenty to say about topics like the Mr. Olympia qualification system and Big Ramy’s special invite to the big show. Check it out “Sergio Oliva Jr. - 2021 Will Be My Year!”

Not many of us are going to look back at 2020 as one of our best years, with COVID-19 threatening our health, our lives, and disrupting our lifestyle. For those of us who put a lot of work into our physiques and take pride in continual improvement thereof, 2020 was a legitimate disaster, with gyms closed and in some cases, gains lost. 2021 is a new year, a chance to undo the damage done in the past and forge ahead to new goals. Ron Harris has your comprehensive plan to “Get Bigger and More Ripped in 2021! Your Complete 12-Month Step-by-Step Plan.”

What does 2021 have in store for bodybuilding fans? There are a few “young guns” who have made such an impact in the sport that they can rightfully be considered the next generation of excellence in bodybuilding: Hunter Labrada, Regan Grimes, Keone Pearson, Nick Walker, Chris Bumstead and Terrence Ruffin. Learn more in“The Young Guns of 2021! These Six 20-Somethings Are All On the Rise.”

Many fans seemed outraged at how great Maxx Charles was able to look in spite of doing everything “wrong.” You can’t argue with results, and whatever he was doing has obviously worked well for him. Watch for big things from this very big man in 2021. His 2020 showings gained him legions of new fans and respect as one of the best in the business. Maxx now has the support of supplement giant Redcon1 in his corner, and he’s back training at The East Coast Mecca, one of the greatest gyms on the planet. “I’m ready to get back on stage and bring the fire! Look for a whole new and improved version of Maxx in 2021,” he tells MD. Read more in “To the Maxx! Maxx ‘The Destroyer’ Charles Is Ready to Move Up in 2021.”
