The Arnold Classic-Europe being staged in Barcelona, Spain, this coming Saturday, September 24th, is shaping up to be quite an intriguing contest. Olympia champ Phil Heath will not be there but the guys who finished second through sixth in Vegas last week will be. What makes it so intriguing is the scoring pattern of the five at the Olympia. Usually we see a consistency throughout the first few places; for example wherein someone finishing third gets straight thirds across the board. Heath did get straight firsts but Shawn Rhoden did not get straight seconds, Dexter Jackson did not get straight thirds, Big Ramy did not get straight fourths, William Bonac did not get straight fifths and Roelly Winklaar did not get straight sixth.

So there was some fluctuation among them all with different factions of fans saying any of that five could have ended up in second. In truth, in Vegas, Rhoden and Jackson were not really at their 100 per cent best. As for Big Ramy at the Friday night prejudging he came in at 290 pounds some 20 pounds lighter than we’ve seen him but he was flattish and lacked his usual WTF Wow factor. The Wow factor was restored at Saturday night’s finals where he came in much fuller and as conditioned as we’ve ever seen him. If he had looked like that on Friday he could well have been second. At the Barcelona soiree the finals take place two hours after the prejudging so there is not the 24-hour period to put things right that applied to Olympia judging. In Vegas William Bonac was the most consistent at of this quintet in maintaining his peak throughout the weekend, and maybe only the fact that he is a relative newcomer to such lofty placings did he finish fifth. So with the knowledge that a week is a long time in bodybuilding these guys have it in them to improve or maybe fade a bit, making this a more open contest than we usually have a week after the Olympia. Besides the aforementioned five we have rising stars entering in the impressive shapes of Dallas McCarver (8th at the Olympia) and Josh Lenartowicz (ninth at the Olympia) so they may ruffle a few feathers of their more experienced rivals. My pick? If Big Ramy can replicate his Saturday night Olympia performance he may well pull off his biggest win yet.
