Janet Layug, Angelica Teixeira and Lauralie Chapados Slayed at the Bikini Olympia
By Ron Harris
If you were at this year’s Bikini Olympia or just following along at home with online coverage, you saw something special take place. Of the top four finalists, three were GAT® SPORT athletes! Janet Layug and three-time Bikini Olympia champion Angelica Teixeira are already established icons in Pro Bikini, and 23-year-old Lauralie Chapados from Montreal is rapidly becoming one of the sport’s most popular stars. All three represented the Bikini division and GAT SPORT in stunning fashion this year at the biggest competition in our industry.
Janet Layug – Second Place
Interview by Tony Doherty for NPC News Online
You had a few wins earlier in the season and were coming into the Olympia as a favorite. So second place wasn’t what you were hoping for.
It’s tough. Earlier this year, I was able to win the Arnold Classic, which had been a longtime dream of mine. It had been where I made my pro debut in 2014, and I did that show six years in a row before I won it. Of course, the Olympia is my ultimate dream. But to stand here today and be onstage with all these amazing women was such an honor. At the end of the day, we all work hard. Congratulations to the winner, Elisa. She deserved it. It’s not a win for me today, but it’s still an honor to be part of this incredible event. It’s the Olympia!
At the judging, you were in the middle most of the time. It seemed like the judges were looking closely at you for the win.
Yes, I was in the mix. I’m still always striving and pushing harder to do my best and bring a better physique for the judges. If I do that consistently, I will get the title.
For what it’s worth, you did improve, and this was the best I’ve ever seen you. You tightened up in all the right places since the Arnold.
I don’t give up. I always know there is room for improvement.
A lot of your fans are probably wondering what you look forward to eating right after a tough prep like this one.
Some people will know this, but my go-to cheat meal after every show is fried buffalo chicken wings, no doubt. Even my nickname is “chicken wings”!

Interview by Tony Doherty for NPC News Online
I’m so used to interviewing you as a champion. This time, I think you knew it wasn’t going your way after the prejudging. I saw you backstage and you said so.
Yeah, after the first callouts I felt great. But then, all that time when I was standing in line so long and waiting for all the other girls to pose and be compared, I started to feel my body holding water. I was like, what’s going on? By the time I went out to do my routine, I could feel my physique already wasn’t the same.
You’re being very honest about your physique, but I have to say that everyone improved this year. The standard seems to have gone up at the Bikini Olympia.
Yeah, and I think I might have had something to do with that. If the standards went up because of me winning for the last three years, then I’m happy that I inspired everyone to step up their game. Not only that, but out of the top 10 women this year, four of us were from Brazil.
I’m certain you inspired them, and they’ve looked up to you.
That was amazing to have so many girls from my native country up there with me. When we finished, I gave the winner Isa a big hug. I told her she deserved the win and that I was very happy for her. She told me I inspire all the women in Brazil who aspire to do well in Bikini, and especially the others who were competing this year at the Olympia. That meant so much to me to hear that. I don’t do this for myself and to just win titles. I do it to inspire people, motivate them, and help them change their lives. Now those girls I was able to impact are inspiring many others. So even though I didn’t keep my title this year, I’m happy. I love this sport. It’s my life, and I’ll be back!

Lauralie Chapados – Fourth Place
Interview by J.M. Manion for NPC News Online
To recap the earlier part of the 2019 season, you hit a bit of a speed bump, going from second place at the 2018 Bikini Olympia to sixth at the Arnold.
It wasn’t a bad thing. I learned so much not only about myself, but also about the Bikini division. And that is, we are all our own unique subjects. A very lean condition might look good on one girl like Elisa Pecini, for example. But that look might not fit on me. They might like me a little fuller, curvier, even with less condition. After last year’s OIympia, I was determined not to come in second again. I came to the Arnold 12 pounds lighter than my usual condition, and it wasn’t a good look. The feedback I got was to stop overthinking, and just bring back the Lauralie we loved from last year. So I did that.
You looked a lot better two weeks later at the Arnold Australia, where you got second.
You know what I did? I stopped doing cardio, I trained just once a day with weights for 45 minutes, and I ate so much food! Even that wasn’t enough to fill me back out. That’s how depleted I was. So for this Olympia, I knew I should focus on bringing the best look for me, which is fuller and not quite as conditioned.
You also moved this year from Montreal to Los Angeles. What made you do that?
After the Arnold Australia, I changed my prep coach. Now I work with James Ayotte of Team Atlas. He specializes in Bikini prep and also coaches Jennifer Dorie. I started training at Gold’s Gym in Venice with Ahmad Clayton, who is an assistant to Charles Glass. We hit it every day at noon. It’s a great team!
Los Angeles must be a big culture shock from Montreal.
It is, but LA feels more like home in some ways. I can get into an Uber, tell them I am a Bikini competitor, and they know what that means. They know all about Gold’s Gym and Arnold. Back home, people have a harder time understanding what I do. They will ask, OK, but what’s your real job? There are also so many healthy food markets and restaurants here.
What was your mindset like going into this Olympia?
I was very calm, which I’ve never been before. I always demand so much from myself, but I knew I was going to be much better than the Arnold, and closer to what the judges are looking for.
Despite Injury, Lauralie Is a Winner
Few people outside of Lauralie Chapados’inner circle know that shecompeted in the Olympia, and won the Yamamoto Pro Cup a week later in Italy, with a serious back injury. Lauralie’s coach, James Ayotte, discusses her injury two weeks out from the Olympia.
“What happened was basically Lauralie had been sending me online check-ins for her entire prep, and at 14 days out, she had messaged me and said there was a big issue. She had told me that she wasn’t able to stand up or walk because she ‘destroyed’ her lower back and had no idea how (most likely training or posing). She sent me her check-in, unable to really stand in a pose, and looked like she had regressed by 12 weeks in one day. She was extremely watery, and her body looked very stressed. She wasn’t able to train, do cardio, or pose the last 14 days of prep. She tried once, but it made her injury worse. We had specialists work on her, but it hasn’t healed yet. We’re going to get X-rays done when she returns to LA from her win in Italy, because a minor lower back injury shouldn’t last for three weeks. It’s probably a serious injury like a slipped disc, and she’s just fighting through it.”
