Adding 70 Pounds of Muscle Takes Consistency and Dedication

Q: I was there at the Legion Sports Fest in Reno when you won the Masters overall Bodybuilding title and the crowd went crazy; how did that feel?

A:That show was extra special to me. Not only was it my first pro win, but my family and lots of friends were there to cheer me on as it was only a two-hour drive from my home in Rocklin, California. That show was almost exactly 14 years to the day that I started my bodybuilding career by winning the novice and open middleweight classes at the Sacramento Championships in November of 2006 at 173 pounds. My show weight the day of the Legion was 243 pounds, so in 14 years I added 70 pounds of stage weight in the same condition as I have always brought. 70 pounds of muscle over 14 years averages out to 5 pounds of muscle per year, which shows how long it takes to build muscle. That and not missing a meal or workout in almost 14 years, as I’ve lived the life of a bodybuilder for that whole time period. Consistency and dedication are the only way to continuously improve and have a truly successful and long bodybuilding career. As most know when you try to rush results, normally you are jeopardizing your health. That’s not an option for me as I truly believe in life after bodybuilding for my kids and my family and will never do it at all costs!

Whenever my career might be over I want to be able to run and play with the kids and not have bad health or be physically unable to do those things because I beat up my body so bad it always hurts just to move! With that said, I’ve made it farther in this sport than anyone including myself could’ve ever imagined. After winning my first show in 2006 and after 10 years of competing as an amateur, I finally turned pro by winning the 35+ overall at the NPC Universe in 2016 at the age of 37. Still to this date I’m the only person that turned pro in a Masters class that’s made it to the open Mr. Olympia. That’s right, I made the Olympia, the Super Bowl of bodybuilding, making me one of the best bodybuilders in the world and no one can take that from me. I earned that and it’s a feeling I’ll never forget as it was a childhood dream that through hard work and dedication, I made come true! To finally get my first pro win 14 years after getting my first amateur win was another dream come true. Even our IFBB Pro League Vice President Tyler Manion said it was my best ever, which makes me proud I was able to display my best and come home with the win in front of my family and friends. I was overjoyed with emotion!

Life is about making memories that last forever, and I’ve made so many memories in this sport of bodybuilding that I’m forever grateful for the opportunity to display my hard work in and out of the weight room on stage.

Staying in Shape After Competition

Q: How do you keep yourself from blowing up and getting out of shape after a competition?

A:This is a very good question and something I feel I’ve mastered over the years. First off, after many months of dieting and fighting cravings it’s inevitable that you are going to have some cheat meals and treats and you should – you deserve it. But don’t blow all your hard work in a matter of weeks and then feel down because you lost your shape.

Here’s what I do and have my clients do immediately after a show to stay in shape but enjoy some fun food and family time. For example, when I carb load for a show, the last few days or week before the show I gradually increase my carbs up to 2 cups of rice (100 grams of carbs) per meal and will even add some honey to those meals if I need the extra carbs without adding more food volume. When the show is over and I’m ready to have some treats and cheat meals, I’ll cut my carb-loading carbs in half so for me I’ll keep my baseline diet with 1 cup of rice (50 grams of carbs) per meal. That way I don’t keep all my glycogen stores full from clean carbs, which allows me to have other calories from not-so-clean sources without spilling me over and storing fat. After a few weeks I’m over the cravings and ready to cut back on cheat foods. That’s when I’ll gradually start increasing my clean carbs up to help with building energy and strength plus fullness. If after a show you increase your clean carbs plus add in the extra junk calories, especially saturated fats, you will for sure start spilling and storing fat at a fast rate plus slow down your metabolism, which is a terrible combination after so many months of dieting. If that happens, the only way to get rid of the fat is to diet down again!

Doing it the way I suggested will keep you in shape and allow you to have some fun food, all while keeping your lines to actually see what you are building! Have fun but stay in shape to make future diets easier to manage. No one wants to cut calories or do more cardio than is necessary. I hope this helps because I promise you it works and will keep you sane in the process!

Strengthening the Immune System

With the COVID-19 situation, I’ve been getting a lot of inquiries as to which supplements can strengthen the immune system and help prevent infection. These are the supplements that I take every day year-round for immune system function and antioxidants, but they are even more beneficial at times of stress or sickness.

Allmax Immune-Boosting stack

Glutamine: 10g 3x day, upon rising, post-workout and before bed.

R+ALA: 2 caps (300mg) with first and last meal.

CytoGreens: 1 scoop upon rising.

Vitastack: 1 multipack with first meal.

Omega 3: 2g with first and last meal.
