Don’t Stress About the Things You Can’t Control

Q: With most competitions cancelled or postponed what are your plans this year?

A: Honestly as I’m writing this, I’m not certain on competition plans this year. I prepped for almost six months before the Arnold Australia was cancelled and then the next two shows I had planned to compete in got cancelled as well. As you know, your body can’t be in prep all year. I had to back off to make sure my body wasn’t burned out and is healthy before starting another prep. It was like a mini off-season. During that time, I increased calories and healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil and avocado to help with health, hormones and lipid panel and I was feeling great. I was putting on clean size, filling up without spilling over, and my strength was also increasing. It was productive and I felt good about starting prep for the late June shows because I thought those would for sure stay on schedule and it would be perfect timing. But I’d barely gotten a few weeks into prep before those also got cancelled or postponed. At that point, after staying so lean for such a long period of time while pushing the weights hard, my body was starting to hurt. My joints were dry, and my tendons were hurting from the muscle tissue being so tight and constantly pulling on tendons to the point where training wasn’t even fun anymore. That’s when you know you need a little break. Even a week out of the gym sometimes is all it takes for your body to start feeling refreshed and reignite the spark you need to get excited about training, at least it is for me since training is the part I’ve enjoyed my whole life! I got into bodybuilding because I loved training and wanted to showcase my efforts on stage, whereas some people start training because they want to get on stage, and usually too soon. To me that’s like putting the cart before the horse. It was just announced that the Olympia was moved to December and since training is going great and I feel like I’m putting on some good size, I’m not sure starting prep again would be productive for me. So, I might just take the rest of the year off and focus on growing and maybe even enjoy a vacation with the family once things open back up. I’m a very scheduled, planned individual so this uncertainty has been hard and stressful, but sometimes you have to change and adjust on the fly. I always try to live by the motto “Don’t stress about the things you can’t control.” I know it is easier said than done, but always try to remember that during times of stress.

Q: I know you work with John Meadows and you guys are really close, how shocking was it when you found out he had a heart attack?

A: Shocking is an understatement! I love John and his family, and he is the epitome of health in bodybuilding, always being proactive and not reactive when it comes to health and supplementation. I look up to him and respect him for his family values and his belief in life after bodybuilding. He does not believe in “bodybuilding at any and all costs.” With that being said, no one can control their predisposition to hereditary conditions. Both of John’s parents had heart attacks in their 30s, so he’s extra diligent about having tests done, such as a coronary calcium score test which measures plaque in arteries. He’s been public about his results which showed very mild plaque burden. That was good news, but obviously couldn’t predict the impact of what may be a blood clotting disorder, which could’ve been the hereditary disorder and also could have been the reason why he almost died and had to have his colon removed in 2005. John is one of the strongest guys I know not just physically but mentally and spiritually as well. As I’m writing this he was just discharged from the hospital. I’m confident he will have a speedy recovery and be there for his loving family for many years to come!

If we can learn anything from this, that’s to make sure – like John -- we get our labs checked, get other heart testing done like the coronary calcium score test plus EKG to be as safe as possible. It just goes to show you no matter what precautions you take in life, nothing is guaranteed, so live your life as happy and gracious as possible and don’t take things or people for granted!

RIP Luke

I want to say a few words in remembrance of Luke Sandoe. Luke died in May 2020 at the young age of 30 years old which was a huge shock to everyone that knew him. Luke elevated the sense of camaraderie among athletes in our sport. He had the highest respect for his brothers in iron and I looked up to him for his sincerity and honesty, as he said what he felt, no holds barred! We had a competitive but healthy relationship. I held the level of conditioning he strived for and he had the size and shape for which I strive. We clicked and stayed in touch. and I’ll greatly miss him and his joking as he always seemed so full of joy and life! Again, life can be unpredictable, so please make sure you communicate your feelings with those you love and value and don’t hold anything in as you never know if you’ll get the chance again!

Stay positive, stay strong and always try to lift your fellow man up instead of beating them down. We all live in this world together and every person can make it a better place!

With the COVID-19 situation, I’ve been getting a lot of inquiries as to which supplements can strengthen the immune system and help prevent infection. These are the supplements that I take every day year-round for immune system function and antioxidants, but they are even more beneficial at times of stress or sickness.
