2018 CPA Leigh Brandt Muscle Classic - Contest Report

From the IFBB Pro League and IFBB International going their separate ways, the Canadian Physique Alliance (CPA) was born. Under the helm of President Ron Hache, the call went out to those in the Fitness Community to promote regional shows along the lines of the NPC in the United States to enable eligibility for athletes to IFBB Pro League Qualifying shows. Some will be for Canadians only, while others will be along the lines of the Ohio Arnold Classic, where it is open to International competitors as well. In the forefront even BEFORE the CPA was formed, west coast promoter Michelle Krack understood the vision of IFBB Pro League President Jim Manion of worldwide IFBB Pro League qualifiers open to all, and boldy undertook to promote such an event alongside the IFBB Vancouver Pro Show. Already in 2018 there's been a number of these shows from India to the UK and more!

The first of the Regional Qualifiers on the west coast was tasked to experienced promoters Dean and Leigh Brandt of Xtreme Promotions. Continuing the tradition of the Leigh Brandt Muscle Classic under the CPA banner, would definitely call this event a success. The ultimate prize for amateur athletes in this competitive road is to be able to vie for that IFBB Pro League Card, and many athletes (more than in the past) are already qualified for such shows based on their previous participation/placing at previous Canadian events...after all, many who did compete back then did so in good faith to be a part of the 'road to the Olympia' and one can't just dismiss those efforts and have them start from square one. Having said that, and with more shows country wide available to the athletes, 170 entries including crossovers is quite a good turnout! The show was run extremely smoothly and the judging efficient but allowing ample stage time for all and everyone to have their spotlight at center stage.

Bodybuilding: With the goal of emulating the NPC system, Novice categories have been brought in to give new competitors a chance to share the stage with those at a similar level and realistically have that trophy presentation award experience right from the gitgo and feel a part of the sport. A number of competitors chose to participate in other classes as well. A good showdown for the Open Overall Crown saw Cody Heinrichs take the title.

Men's Classic Physique: As with Women's Physique eclipsing Bodybuilding in participation, Men's Classic Physique appears to be doing the same at least at this show. Figure: True to the spirit of the Canadian Physique Alliance and nationwide eligibility to enter ANY show, Saskatchewan's Jenna Laurendeau brought a tight package to the stage in the Open Short Class, showing the right amount of muscle separation, etc. to win the judges votes. The Open Tall Class was won by Kimberley Siemens, while not as lean throughout, is poised to do great things with her very symmetrical physique and confident posing onstage.

Bikini - Novice & Grandmaster: The two divisions which did not result in an Overall showdown started the festivities. By far the most participated category is Bikini, and nowhere else is the Novice division more needed or welcome to give many of the women a chance to make their mark on the podium. Most did compete in other classes as well, for example Colette Baber winning the Grandmaster class. Carrie Cheung has the beginnings of an excellent career in the sport. Tiny waist, wide shoulders and pronounced muscle lines and shape without being "too lean" is a great recipe to build on moving forward. She also has that added 'X' factor of beauty, stage presence and a connection with the audience. This would turn out to be a VERY good day for her.

Bikini - Masters: Dominating this division was the "bombshell" look of Amanda Dear. With posing on point and a great choice of suit to show muscle development top to bottom, very much ready for the road ahead in this sport. She will be a force to be reckoned with at a future Pro Qualifier.

Bikini - Open: Four good sized classes made for a formidable group of winners going for that Overall title. Short class had the earlier mentioned Carrie Cheung and Alexandra Sabo finish first and second respectively. Alexandra has put on good size since her debut almost a year ago and suspecting this show is just a warmup as she fine tunes her look for the next level. Of note in terms of presentation onstage were Mallory Brown (transition sequence) and photogenic Amy Volpatti. Medium Class was  Amanda Dear's to take center stage again, one could not help being impressed. Medium-Tall class saw a return to the stage of Kelsey Harker, super comfortable up there for a well deserved class win. Tall class winner Kat Easterbrook continues to improve. Of note was the return to the stage after giving birth of Maggie Mulford, a nice surprise!

Bikini - Overall: A chance for the judges to compare a range of looks, each having their advantages. Carrie Cheung had the right combination of beauty and "brawn", a fine representative for the sport. In Conclusion:It's a new era for the sport in Canada, "for the athletes" is the CPA motto. Give them the clearest and fair path with the most opportunities to reach their goals and that's all one can ask for.
