2017 BCABBA Popeye's Fall Classic - Contest Report

In its third year, promoter Tarik Rahiman spared no expense in putting together a star studded event including guest posers such as Flex Lewis and making sure the athletes were very well treated from sponsor prizes to "goody bags". Held at the River Rock Casino Resort in the Vancouver suburb of Richmond, the venue's convenience with the hotel, etc. made for a stress free weekend for the participants. With structural changes to the sport in Canada due to the recent split between the International IFBB and IFBB Pro League, competitors will be weighing their options in the coming months and deciding their paths. Top 5 from this BCABBA show qualified for CBBF Nationals while the IFBB Pro League affiliate in Canada (CPA) as its start up criteria, offering them entry to their initial Pro Qualifiers as well.

Bodybuilding:

On the Women's side, just one competitor Kennedy Ledgerwood who has done Women's Physique and now is also qualified nationally in Bodybuilding. A good group of class winners on the men's side. Of note was Shawn Joy who also won the Master's OVerall and Trung Danh who also won his Classic Physique class. Heavyweight Jess Jordan won the Open Overall title.

01. Open Women's Bodybuilding - Kennedy Ledgerwood - 1st.
02. Junior Men's Bodybuilding - Simon Molitor - 1st.
03. Masters Men's Bodybuilding (Over 50) - Marko Joannou - 1st.
04. Masters Men's Bodybuilding (Over 40) - Shawn Joy - 1st and Open Middleweight - 3rd.
05. Open Men's Lightweight Bodybuilding - Trung Danh - 1st.
06. Open Men's Light Heavyweight Bodybuilding - Tovah Sahl - 1st.
07. Open Men's Heavyweight Bodybuilding - Jess Jordan - 1st (Overall).

Women's Physique:

Only a handful of competitors entered this time, but a great story in Overall Champion Jo-Ann Huber's move from Figure, where she had won Provincial Masters Overall a few months earlier. It's like she was meant for this division though, nice lines and excellent posing. She also received the Phoenix Award from Official Photographer David Ford symbolizing her transformation effort.

12. Open Women's Physique Class 'A' - Rebekaah Kennedy - 1st.
13. Open Women's Physique Class 'B'/Masters - Jo-Ann Huber - 1st (Overall).

Men's Classic Physique:

This category is definitely growing in popularity, the criterea to determine classes is a height/weight ratio and apparently that's being tweaked at the international level going forward to up the maximum weights after the initial years. At this show there were 3 classes, Michael Sheffer won both the Overall as well as the Overall in Men's Physique. Repeating what we stated from last year's show, at the end of the day, especially at this level, the most 'conditioned' athlete seems to excel regardless of which discipline of the two 'Physiques' they enter.

14. Men's Classic Physique Class 'A' - Trung Danh - 1st.
15. Men's Classic Physique Class 'B' - Michael Sheffer - 1st (Overall).
16. Men's Classic Physique Class 'C' - Ayden Shoulak - 1st.

Figure:

Some pleasant surprises as new entries into the category made their presense felt! Masters saw Julie England win overall plus a second place in her open class 'B'. With a lean conditioned look, Open Class 'A' went to Sandra Landry, a definite bright future for her in the sport. Open 'C' was where Overall Champion Kaely Anderson emerged, a former bikini competitor who did well there having competed in the NPC. A very proportional look that's perfect for Figure and as she progresses, should do well at the next level. Of note was second placer Kait Cavers, good muscle shape all around and definitely on her way up too. Veteran competitor Sandra Lee Martin placed third after being away from competition for a while.

17. Masters Figure (Over 45) - Krisztina Lyle - 1st and Open Class 'A' - 3rd.
18. Masters Figure (Over 35) - Julie England - 1st (Overall) and Open Class 'B' - 1st.
19. Open Figure Class 'A' - Sandra Landry - 1st.
20. Open Figure Class 'C' - Kaely Anderson - 1st (Overall).
21. Open Figure Class 'C' - Kaely Anderson - 1st, Kait Cavers - 2nd and Sandra Lee Martin - 3rd.
22. Open Figure - Overall Comparisons.
23. Open Figure Class 'C' - Kaely Anderson - 1st (Overall).

Men's Physique:

As mentioned earlier, Michael Sheffer took the Overall here, great conditioning.

24. Masters Men's Physique - Pawlo Marcynuik - 1st.
25. Open Men's Physique Class 'A' - Julian Ochoa - 1st.
26. Open Men's Physique Class 'B' - Michael Sheffer - 1st (Overall).
27. Open Men's Physique Class 'C' - Michael Kaye - 1st.

Bikini:

Despite the number of total competitors in the show being slightly down from the previous year, Bikini draws a great turnout as usual. Starting with the Masters 45+ class, 1st placer Andrea Alfred-Smith also placed 4th in her open class, very worthy contender at the next level. Always in great condition, Masters 35+ winner Sheri Amendt took both the Overall and like Andrea, a 4th place in her open class. She's competed successfully in both bikini and figure. In the Open Classes, 'A' saw Natalie Litchfield (who mostly competed in Figure) return to Bikini for this show. The smallest of the Open classes with just 3 competitors, the other 5 were more in keeping with the size we'd grown accustomed to at major shows. Seemingly very close top 5 as evidenced for example by the trio of Sheri Amendt, Jessica Hui and Kindra Lahey who all were top 5's in 'B' Class and Masters 35+, but the ordering was slightly different where Jessica placed ahead of Sheri in their open class. That can happen when you toss others into the mix or it was just that close! 'C' Class was where overall open champion Sarah Wright emerged from. Always a nice bikini look for runner-up Tiffany Roy, with Nola Pullar placing 3rd in both this and her Masters 35+ class. A very competitive 'D' Class followed, Emily Graham placing ahead of Laura Harvey who had a bit leaner look. Could have gone either way. Stunning Devon McConnachie took 'E' Class and Jennifer Jackson was the top placer in 'F'.

28. Masters Bikini (Over 45) - Andrea Alfred-Smith - 1st and Open Class 'D' - 4th.
29. Masters Bikini (Over 35) - Sheri Amendt - 1st (Overall) and Open Class 'B' - 4th.
30. Open Bikini Class 'A' - Natalie Litchfield - 1st.
31. Open Bikini Class 'B' - Candace Schule - 1st.
32. Open Bikini Class 'B' - Teresa Dunnigan - 2nd.
33. Open Bikini Class 'B' - Sheri Amendt - 4th, Jessica Hui - 3rd and Kindra Lahey - 5th.
34. Open Bikini Class 'C' - Sarah Wright - 1st (Overall).
35. Open Bikini Class 'C' - Sarah Wright - 1st, Nola Pullar - 3rd and Tiffany Roy - 2nd.
36. Open Bikini Class 'D' - Emily Graham - 1st.
37. Open Bikini Class 'D' - Laura Harvey - 2nd.
38. Open Bikini Class 'D' - Cami Darling - 3rd.
39. Open Bikini Class 'E' - Devon McConaanchie - 1st.

In Conclusion:

A huge thanks to the British Columbia Amateur Bodybuilding Association (judges and executive), Promoter Tarik Rahiman and all the volunteers who made this show a success and such a pleasure to cover.
