Contest Report - 2017 CBBF Bodybuilding Championships

Celebrating the Best of Canada!

Appropriately, the crowning of Canada's latest IFBB Pro Athletes was celebrated on the Nation's Birthday (Canada Day) and as much of an accomplished group of competitors as there has ever been. Promoter John Dirks of Paramount Performance pulled out all the stops to make the experience as rewarding and as smoothly run for the athletes as possible. It was the second year for the "one show format" and despite a large turnout of over 430 competitors (some in multiple classes), was very manageable for the CBBF judging panel and the media coverage.

Women's Bodybuilding

As a reporter who has covered the British Columbia Amateur Bodybuilding Federation for decades, it was with some satisfaction that this show celebrated Dawn Alison's Overall wins in both Masters and Open Classes. She brought her best and it showed! Second Pro card went to Melinna Perron who showed marked improvement from last year. Of note was Open Light-Heavyweight class runner-up Sheri Smith, very dialed in and will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

Men's Bodybuilding

The number of competitors in each class has grown, making the eventual placers' accomplishments that much more significant. It always seems to be one category that garners the most excitement, and again this year it was the Open Light-Heavyweights. A scored "tie" between 1st Placer (awarded the second Pro Card) Adolph Quoida and equally massive runner-up Mahmood Al Durrah, plus the ever improving Stephen Didoshak from BC in third place made for quite the showdown. Overall Men's Bodybuilding went to Super-Heavyweight Jonathan Shreve from Nova Scotia, a long time coming and finally getting the recognition so richly deserved! Of special interest was the Open Middleweight Class where father and son competed against each other, that would be Denis and Jesse Leblanc placing 3rd and 2nd respectively. In Masters, huge Heavyweight Maher Alasfar dominated to take overall there.

Couple's Bodybuilding

Only 2 pairs of competitors. 1st Place went to Ontario's Sydney Ma & Farzad Ghotbi, they were part of our OPA Provincials coverage on this website.

Men's Classic Physique

Only one Pro Card awarded in this category, B class winner Antwane Hamlett. One could make a strong case for awarding a second one to the runner-up in the class, Cody Drobot who brings true artistry to his stage presentation.

30. Men's Classic Physique - C - Adam Beveridge - 1st.

Bikini

Being the class with the largest participation, the competitive level is fierce. Starting with Masters, only a few crossovers to Open Classes were entered (most notable Sarah Plowman), the top placers were zoned in on this category. Alberta's Kim Meroniuk took the overall title. Open classes saw some surprises, where those who placed well in previous shows slipped a bit and vice versa. Hard to gauge the look the judges are rewarding but a good rule of thumb is how they compare and are on the path to the IFBB ideal for the category. To that extent some good choices who exhibited both the muscle and stage presence to potentially go further in the sport. 'A' Class winner Petra Mace was a perfect example of that, photogenic would be an understatement, and no lack of muscle shape! Of note was 6th placer Rashelle Gauthier from BC, in only her first Nationals. 'B' Class saw perennial favorite Amanda Ancheta take Overall as well. 'C' Class was won by Navi Sran, one of the classiest and most graceful presentations onstage as always. Quebec always sends some of the top placers in bikini and 'D' through 'F' Classes showed that. 'D' was scored a tie between that Province's Sandra Baltatu and the always in great shape Nicole Rogers from Alberta. A slimmed down, sleeker look for Nicole, she'll be back. 'E' was a tough battle where veteran competitor Angeline Jeanson from Quebec narrowly edged Alberta's Amanda Carrothers for the win. Angeline went on to receive the second Pro card in this category. Amanda had nice proportionality and good muscle detail, posing was spot on. Rounding out Bikini was the Tall Class, a couple of returns from 2016 with Annette Mountford and Sarah Ainsley Harrison. Of note was BC's Janelle Shelfow placing 3rd in her very first Nationals! Quebec's Sarah Edmond took 1st, while earlier mentioned Sarah Plowman placed 2nd.
