How You Look Is More Important Than Winning

What is the one best piece of advice you can offer an up-and-coming bodybuilder?

If I had to offer one thing, I’d say to never compete simply for a trophy. Winning is awesome, but only when it means something. There is nothing intrinsically great about winning. You could enter a show and be the only one in your class and win, or you can win in a weak lineup; or you could win and still not be proud of the way you look. The most important thing is to be proud of the way you look and the progress you have made. That is the accomplishment, as far as I’m concerned. People who talk about beating other competitors are motivated by fear of losing. Fear is a poor motivator. You should get out of bed each day and be happy to train and diet and sacrifice, knowing that you will be rewarded with the satisfaction of being proud of what is staring back at you in the mirror. Winning is just the icing on the cake after that.

Seated Military Press for Boulder Shoulders

I want to get my shoulders stronger, as they are lacking a bit. In one of your DVDs, you talk about how you used standing barbell presses to get your shoulders stronger. Did you use them as your primary pressing movement for shoulders or just superset with them?

I used standing presses as a way to burn more calories and improve conditioning prior to a contest. If pure shoulder size and/or strength is what you’re after, the seated military press is the way to go. You will be able to handle a lot more weight that way.
