Winning the 212 New York Pro

Guy, what does it mean now that you finally won the 212 division of the prestigious New York Pro? Many of the guys who have won that show went on to be top Olympia competitors. Do you think this will help your placing at the Olympia?

Winning that show was the MOST memorable moment in my career. I remember watching so many greats win that show when it was the Night of Champions, and when they changed it to the New York Pro. That show is one of the most prestigious shows next to the Arnold and the Olympia, and it’s a show that everyone dreams of winning. This year, since the show was held not only in my native state of New Jersey but also on Mother’s Day, with most of my family there, it was very emotional for me.

Many said that it wasn’t a deep lineup or that I was the favorite going in— all of that means shit to me. I can only control and focus on myself … I can’t control how someone else looks or who shows up, and that’s what I did. I found out I was the first person to come out onstage because it went in alphabetical order, and that made me even more excited. I wanted to open and shut the door the minute I walked out on that stage, just like when Kai won it a few years ago— everyone said it was Kai then everyone else, and that’s what I wanted. I wanted to make a statement regardless of who showed up, and I did just that. This was hands down, the best package I have brought to the stage to date. I was full, peeled, bone dry, everything was popping onstage and I was confident enough that Chris and I did everything we could to win that show— and we did, hands down.

Not only did I win, but I also had my family there, who had never seen me win a pro show. My sister and her family were there with my nephew and godson, along with my mother and father … there were aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, training partners, friends from Gold’s Gym in Bridgewater where I train— the place was packed with fans! I couldn’t have been blessed for a better day to win my fourth IFBB pro show than that day and that show.

As for the Olympia, this is the first time I won a show and shut it down until the Olympia. Since I turned pro, I have done numerous shows before the Olympia. Even after I won the New York Pro, I wanted to keep going and compete— but after talking with some higher-ups and Chris, we decided that this is the look that EVERYONE loved. Many judges told me this was the look they had been waiting for me to bring to the stage. So I decided to not diet anymore, and get a little bit of a rebound and go full steam ahead for the Olympia, hoping to crack that top-three spot, which I have no doubt that I will. I don’t think winning this show will help me at the Olympia, but I know I have a lot of attention on myself after the package I brought to New York— so now it’s time to shock everyone again, and blow people away at the Mr. Olympia.
