Phil Heath Bodybuilder of the Decade

By Steve Blechman

A lot of bodybuilders come and go, but only a handful of competitors have stayed on top long enough to become bodybuilding superstars, enjoying longevity in the sport through hard work, integrity, and determination. Seven-time Mr. Olympia Phil Heath is that rare bodybuilder, and with good reason: Phil Heath arguably has the most complete physique bodybuilding has ever seen. Phil has earned the title of Bodybuilder of the Decade, which is why he’s on the cover of this month’s MD.

Phil Heath is a very gifted athlete— that’s why he’s known as “The Gift.” But Phil’s unique place in bodybuilding history transcends his physique. Only eight competitors have won the Sandow more than twice— and Phil Heath is a member of that elite group of Sergio Oliva, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Frank Zane, Lee Haney, Dorian Yates, Ronnie Coleman, and Jay Cutler. Phil is among a select group Mr. Olympia legends, and he created his own “Heath era” of domination— by setting a new standard for size, shape, and conditioning and carving out his place in bodybuilding history. Find out what he is doing these days in “Phil Heath: Bodybuilder of the Decade!” an exclusive interview with Ron Harris.

A friend urged Hadi Choopan to try bodybuilding, as he was always naturally muscular. It wasn’t long before his body morphed into what it was always meant to be— a powerful physique packed with thick, dense, and detailed muscle. In recent years, we’ve witnessed Hadi take out men like Brandon Curry, Nathan De asha, Iain Valliere and Lukas Osladil. Hadi Choopan made an amazing debut, at this year’s Olympia placing third. An amazing accomplishment! He will be a force to reckon with in the future! We wish him the very best. Check out “Hadi Choopan: The Persian Wolf!” feature this month and spectacular photos.

For many people, September signifies the end of summer and the beginning of fall— the time when people put away their swim trunks, sunblock, and switch out their tank tops and shorts for big T-shirts, hoodies and workout pants. It’s time to transition from the traditional “summer cut” back over to muscle-building mode. With that in mind, MD wants you to make the most of this off-season by focusing on the exercises that will deliver the most bang for the buck in “Weapons of Mass Construction:12 Exercises to Pack on Beef Fast!”

The Mr. Olympia contest is where the top guns of pro bodybuilding do battle every September to determine who rightfully deserves to be recognized as the very best-built man alive. It’s only fitting that we bring you arm-training routines and tips from this elite group of iron warriors at this year’s showdown in Las Vegas. In “Top Guns of the Olympia!Arm Training With the Best in the World” on page 88, learn how some of the most impressive arms ever built got that way.

Who has the best back in the IFBB Pro league today? Many have pointed to the insanely thick and rugged lats of George Peterson as being worthy of that distinction. At any contest George is competing in, there is an audible collective gasp from the audience whenever he turns around and hits a back shot. Find out how this Redcon1 athlete built his huge back in “Back of ‘Da Bull’ – George Peterson Has the Best Back in Classic! Congratulations to George Peterson for placing third at the Olympia. It was his best condition and showing ever in the classic division.

With so many divisions in the IFBB Pro League now for both men and women, it’s not unusual at all for athletes to switch divisions. Classic Physique’s two-time Olympia champ, Breon Ansley, started his pro career as a 212 bodybuilder. Now, Logan Franklin is the latest competitor to turn in his board shorts, as we learn in “Classic Evolution: Logan Franklin Makes a Successful Transition From Men’s Physique to Classic” on page 100. Logan is psyched about his new look, and as this MHP athlete tells MD: “Anyone who’s followed my career knows I’ve always improved at every show I’ve done. I bring something crazier every time.”
